Are you looking for a bikini that makes a difference?
Look no further than Elka Swim – we are a brand committed to saving the environment through our 1% for the planet initiative. By donating 1% of our proceeds to environmental initiatives worldwide, we are helping to ensure that our planet stays healthy and beautiful for generations to come - and when you purchase from us, you will be too.
But our commitment doesn't stop there.
Did you know we also use thick supportive materials to make our reversible swimwear, which means less impact on the environment? Because quality swimwear means you can keep them summer after summer, while the reversible options mean you shop less.
Our reversible swimwear range is not only stylish but gives you more styling options, so you don't have to replace your bikini as often to keep your bikini cupboard looking fresh.
In other words, when you purchase a bikini from Elka Swim, you can rest assured knowing that you are doing your part to help save the planet. So why not ditch fast fashion and switch to a brand that cares about the environment? Your planet – and your wardrobe – will thank you.
What is 1% for the planet?
1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving.
They recognize that the current level of environmental giving - only 3% of total philanthropy - is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet.
Their business and individual membership, 1% for the Planet inspire people to support environmental organizations through annual membership and everyday actions.
They advise on giving strategies, certify donations, and amplify the impact of the network. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, our members (including us, Elka Swim) have contributed to giving more than $175 million to environmental nonprofits to date.
Today, 1% for the Planet is a network of more than 1,500 member businesses, a new and expanding core with hundreds of individual members, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 60 countries.
To date,1% For The Planet has certified more than $250 million in support to approved environmental nonprofits.
The Impacts of Fast Fashion on the Environment.
On average, people bought 60% more garments in 2014 than they did in 2000.
A lot of this clothing ends up in the dump. The equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes is burned or dumped in a landfill every second. In total, up to 85% of textiles go into landfills each year. That's enough to fill the Sydney harbour annually.
In Europe, fashion companies went from an average offering of two collections per year in 2000 to five in 2011. Some brands these days put out up to 24 collections per year.
While the fast fashion industry has made it easier and cheaper than ever before to keep up with the latest trends, this comes at a huge cost to the environment.
So what can be done to break the cycle? One solution is to shop less overall and invest in quality pieces that will last you for years to come. Every time you buy a new garment, ask yourself – do I really need this?
Can I make do with what I already have? You might be surprised at how much easier it is to break the habit of fast fashion once you start thinking about your purchases in this way.
The term ‘fast fashion’ refers to cheaply produced and priced garments.
How are we helping break the cycle?
By creating quality reversible swimwear. Quality material means your swimwear will last for years to come while the reversible style means you get more swimwear options from one bikini so you can shop less.
Elka Swim is committed to helping break the fast fashion cycle by creating high quality, reversible swimwear, producing only a couple of collections per year and keeping the quantity of those collections to a minimum.
Our swimsuits are made from thick, supportive materials that will last for years, and our reversible styles give you twice as many options to choose from. So instead of buying a new bikini every season, you can invest in an Elka Swimsuit that will last you for years to come.
Not only will you save money in the long run, but you'll also be doing your part to help reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
Reversible swimwear give you twice as many options to choose from.
What else do we do to help the planet?
At Elka Swim, we have ditched single-use plastics within the business and opted for reusable biodegradable garment bags.
These bags are made from plant-based materials that will break down over time, making them much better for the environment than traditional plastic bags. Plus, they're reusable, so you can use them over and over again to store your Elka Swimsuit (or any other clothing items or even your fruit and veggies).
We have also become big fans of the compostable mailing bags from Hero Packaging. They are 100% home-compostable and made from 70-80% PBAT (a copolymer that is completely compostable) and 20-30% PLA (which is a fancy way of saying cornstarch).
And, best of all in a commercial compostable environment, it will break down within 90 days. At home, it may take up to 120 days.

"Love, love love! Elka Swim the Dream Set is my FAVE. I love the cut of the bottoms and the cute tie at the front. Being a shorter girl I find a lot of bikini bottoms too big for me and these fit great - not too big/high in the front. I also love wearing my one piece with a pair of denim shorts for a more casual look :)" - Michelle Knight via Google Reviews
